Macros are macronutrients. These are nutrients that your body requires in large amounts for normal growth and development — namely, carbs, fats and proteins. These are also the building blocks of most meals: protein (meat for most of us) carbs (sweet potatoes, rice, other “starchy” sides) and fats (hopefully healthier fats like olive oil or avocados).

The acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges (AMDR) set forth by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recommend that people get:

  • 45–65% of their calories from carbs
  • 20–35% of their calories from fats
  • 10–35% of their calories from proteins
Now of course, this is a wide range and sets us up for many variables. The biggest variable is you! Each person is different and will have different needs (cutting, bulking, maintenance) and each person’s body is going to react differently to any given macro ratio.

We don’t! Each meal is designed to have a proper blend of macros, but not adhere to a specific ratio. We definitely plan our meals to lean heavier on protein, but the most important thing is where our nutrients come from. At Macro Chef, we use whole, healthy ingredients. By staying away from overly refined and processed ingredients, we ensure that your body is getting what it needs, from a healthy source.

Each Macro Chef meal lists calorie counts, as well as grams of each macronutrient in the meal. We also sell many of our proteins and carbs in bulk, to help you further customize your meals.

Well, what do you want to know? Here are a couple of basics on calories:

  1. While all calories are “equal” when it comes to units of energy, they are not all equal when it comes to what they do to us! Four cups of broccoli is 100 calories. Half of a medium sized glazed donut is 100 calories. Which one do you think is going to fill you up more? Also, who only eats half a glazed donut?
  2. While we want to make sure that we are eating clean, healthy sources of macronutrients (for better performance as well as general health), ultimately, calories in versus calories out is what is truly going to matter. When you expend more calories than you eat, you’re going to lose weight.
  3. Macro Chef’s “Chef Prepared. Athlete Approved.” meals are all designed to provide the calories you need, without an overload. Some meals are higher calorie than others, sure, but 3 meals a day is going to keep you around 2000 calories, while keeping you satisfied. For those that need a higher calorie diet, our bulk menu items are a great way to up the calorie count (in a healthy way!) while keeping it clean and wholesome.

     

Well, now, that’s something we just can’t answer! Or, at least, not honestly. Each person has unique dietary needs and will react differently to any given food or diet. Our menu is designed to appeal to the athlete in all of us, in whatever path we choose, whether walking, biking, Crossfitting, body building, or any other activity. While diet is the biggest component of any weight loss program, it is still only one component.

Something else to think about while we’re up on our soap box: don’t just pay attention to the number on the scale:

  1. You're more than that number!
  2. Over time, your weight in pounds may not change all that much, but your body composition and health certainly will!
